When we purchase pine furniture for our home we usually think about how it looks, whether it suits our style, and how long it will last before falling apart.
However, we don't always think about where the wood itself has come from and the long journey it has made to get to our living room.
Pine trees are one of the most abundant tree species in the world.
This makes using pine wood for furniture environmentally sustainable because it does not threaten the species.
In fact, many companies marketing and selling pine furniture actually label themselves as 'Carbon Neutral' because they support and maintain pine tree plantations that help to absorb gases that are harming atmosphere.
Pine trees are abundant in the northern part of the world above the equator.
However, many pine tree plantations can also be found in the southern parts of the hemisphere in Latin America and Sumatra.
And these plantations are in a lot of demand due to the flexibility and durability of pine wood. It is the perfect material for various kinds of furniture and is incredibly adaptable.
Following many years of growth, the pine tree is cut, replanted and put through a kiln for drying to ensure it does not split and wrapping of the wood is avoided.
Although durable, pine wood is also soft and prone to scratches, therefore it needs to be hand crafted with great care. After the piece has been carved and sanded it needs to be stained and varnished to ensure it is well maintained.
Pine furniture is beautiful, elegant and created out of a fantastic sustainable material.
