Painting Pine

Many people purchase pine furniture not only for its hard wearing nature and elegant appearance, but also because it is flexible in nature and can be changed to suit your style and meet your requirements.  Pine wood can easily be varnished, coated and painted to suit your specifications.  So how do you go about doing a DIY job on your pine furniture without causing it any damage?

Well first things first, don't rush into grabbing your paint brush and apron.
Before you begin you will need to ensure you have the appropriate tools you need to complete the job to a professional standard.

You will need wood primer, a couple of paint brushes, drop cloths, rag cloths, a roller brush, a sponge and a soap and water solution.  These items can easily be purchased from local DIY stores, and you may even find a few bits and pieces you require around the house.

Next, you will need to clean the furniture.  Use the sponge and dip it into the soap and water solution and gently wipe all areas of the surface, paying particular attention to corners, joins, hinges and locks.

Next you will need to sand the furniture.  This will ensure that the surface is even and the paint sticks to the wood better.  However be careful not to over sand your wood with coarse sand paper.  Choose something to match the texture of your pine wood.  Something lightly grained would be best when working with a soft wood such as pine.

Next you will need to coat the surface of the wood with your primer.  Ensure you move your paintbrush in the same direction when coating.  This will ensure consistency when applying your paint which should follow once your primer has been left to dry for a sufficient amount of time.

Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours and if you want to add a finish touch use a pine furniture coating or varnish to enhance the woods appearance.  This can be done with all kinds of pine wood furniture and is the ideal way to modernise an old piece of furniture, or create a new look in your home.
