The History of Pine Wood

By Nicola Snaith

For many, many years, pine trees have been used throughout the world as a key factor in the advancement of man kind.   Since cave men discovered fire and collected pine cones to keep their flames burning throughout the night, man kind has not only appreciated the qualities of pine, but used it to advance their way of life.

Fishing was not just a sport but a way of life and a necessity for survival.   Men would make triton’s from carved pieces of pine tree branches and use them to catch their food from the river.   Spears were also made from small, straight pieces of pine wood.   Their strength and light weight nature made them an ideal tool for catching small game.

The evolving man began to experiment with building structures.   They would drive thick, lengths of pine wood in to the ground as posts for each corner of the structure.   Along with animal skins, pine needles were used to create cover and a roof for the shelter.   Small items of furniture such as stools and tables were also made from pine wood.   These items were very basic but had the necessary qualities.

The tradition of building structures from pine wood has not been lost over time.   As pine trees are so adaptable, they have now become the leading source for paper products and building materials.   Due to their ever more regular use, pine trees have long since been harvested to ensure they are a renewable resource that is long used for the advancement and pleasure of man kind.
